Bristol Hiring Right Now: What candidates want — and how employers can win them

Hiring this year hasn’t necessarily been easy, whilst the level of jobs have lowered this year, experienced candidates are still very much in demand.  The good news? Bristol’s market is resilient and full of brilliant people. The challenge is that candidate expectations have moved on — and the best ones won’t wait around.  Here are things to consider when recruiting for your business.

Hybrid is here to stay — but clarity beats flexibility

Most Bristol candidates still want hybrid, but what they value more than anything is predictability: which days, what hours, and how performance is measured. “Work from wherever” sounds nice; two anchor days with a clear team rhythm is important to job seekers.  Put the hybrid pattern in the job advert.

Salary transparency isn’t optional anymore

Roles without a band get less traffic and lower quality applications. People benchmark instantly, and hidden ranges suggest low confidence.  Publish a sensible range and explain how progression works in year one. If you can’t publish a salary do add a line such as: “We always discuss pay upfront to save you time; ask us for the full band.”

Skills-first

Bristol teams (especially in ops, finance, marketing and tech) are recruiting transferable skills: stakeholder comms, data comfort, customer empathy, process improvement. You can widen your pool by separating must‑haves from the skills and experience they would be able to learn in the role.

Speed is the new employer brand

Top candidates move in 7–14 days when processes are tight. Every extra stage or “just one more chat” risks losing them to your competitor.

Interview design

Candidates can be wary of “chatty” interviews with no structure. Blend warmth with a fair task.  Give candidates structure and plan the interviews to know what you will be wanting to find out.

Offers that land

Make it easy to say yes.  Offer them what they have said they are looking for.  Be clear on salary bandings, if you aren’t able to offer what they want from your first interview, ensure you cover salary for them to know what is achievable and when this could be reviewed

Good luck and remember if you are struggling to find the perfect person for your team, we’d always be delighted to help with your recruitment.

We love what we do recruiting great candidates for fantastic employers
