Writing the perfect cover letter….

One of our client’s recently asked applicants to include a cover letter with their CV so we thought it would be helpful to have a refresher on what to include in the perfect cover letter to make sure you make the best impression on potential employers.

  1. **Customize for Each Job Application**: Tailor your cover letter to the specific job and company you’re applying to. Research the company’s values, mission, and culture, and align your language and examples accordingly.
  2. **Start with a Strong Opening**: Begin your cover letter with an introduction that grabs the reader’s attention. You can mention how you learned about the job opening or something impressive about the company that caught your interest.
  3. **Address the Hiring Manager Directly**: Whenever possible, address your cover letter to the hiring manager by name. If you don’t have a name, use a generic greeting such as “Dear Hiring Manager” or “To Whom It May Concern.”
  4. **Highlight Your Relevant Experience and Skills**: Use the body of your cover letter to showcase your most relevant qualifications and experiences that make you a strong candidate for the position. Focus on achievements and experiences that directly relate to the job requirements.
  5. **Provide Specific Examples**: Instead of simply listing your skills and experiences, provide concrete examples of how you’ve used them to achieve results in previous roles. Quantify your accomplishments with numbers and metrics whenever possible.
  6. **Show Enthusiasm and Passion**: Demonstrate your enthusiasm for the job and the company by expressing why you’re excited about the opportunity and how you can contribute to their success. Use language that conveys genuine interest and passion for the role.
  7. **Address Potential Concerns or Gaps**: If you have any employment gaps or aspects of your background that may raise questions, address them briefly and positively in your cover letter. Focus on what you’ve learned or how you’ve grown from those experiences.
  8. **Express Your Fit with the Company Culture**: Show that you’ve done your research on the company culture and explain how your values and work style align with theirs. Employers often seek candidates who will not only excel in the role but also contribute positively to the team dynamic.
  9. **Keep it Concise and Professional**: Your cover letter should be concise and to the point, typically no longer than one page. Use a professional tone and language, and ensure that your writing is clear, error-free, and grammatically correct.
  10. 10. **Close with a Strong Conclusion**: End your cover letter with a confident closing statement reiterating your interest in the position and thanking the hiring manager for considering your application. Include a call to action, such as expressing your eagerness to discuss further in an interview.
  11. 11. **Proofread and Edit Carefully**: Before sending your cover letter, carefully proofread it to catch any typos, grammatical errors, or awkward phrasing. Consider asking a friend or mentor to review it as well for feedback.

Following these tips and creating a well thought out cover letter when required, will dramatically increase your chances of standing out to employers and landing interviews for your dream job.
