Combating your interview nerves….
You have finally secured an interview for the job of your dreams. You have researched everything there is to know about the company, re read your CV and the job description 100 times and prepared for every interview question possible. You could not be more prepared, but you are a nervous wreck ……. what do you do?
Go for a walk 🚶➡️
Fresh air is always a good thing. If it is a virtual or phone-based interview take a walk around the block before you start. If it is face-to-face, arrive early and walk around before you go in to clear your head.
Don’t speak too fast 🗣️
Nerves tends to make us speak more quickly so while you are waiting for your interview breathe in through your nose for the count of three. Do this three times. In that time your heart rate will lower, and you will find you won’t rush when you speak.
Stop your voice shaking 🫨
Stick your tongue out as far as it will go and try to recite Humpty Dumpty out loud. As mad as it sounds, this will open your throat, making you sound more confident. Obviously, do this before your interview and out of sight of your interviewers!
Stand up while you wait 👣
For in-person interviews you will often be offered a seat whilst you wait. Don’t take it – stay standing. That way your interviewers first impression will not be you struggling out of a chair – you will look and feel more confident if you are on their level when you meet them.
Sit correctly in the interview 🪑
Lean slightly forward which stops your throat tightening and makes you look and feel more dynamic and engaged.
Show your hands 🤚
Statistics show you are more likely to get a job if interviewers can see your hands – it is a sign of honesty.
Make your interviewer feel special 🙂
Whilst it is important to sell yourself in an interview remember to ask questions and be genuinely interested in the reply.
Listen 👂
Stop nerves making it hard to listen leading to answering questions incorrectly. Do this by trying to slow down your bodies natural responses and listen.
Be yourself 👨👩
The most important tip of all!! When we are being ourselves, we come across as relaxed, authentic, and confident. 🫱🏻🫲🏻
Interviews are artificial situations but remember you are there because you have been shortlisted so the company must already think pretty highly of you. Remember to slow down and be yourself and you will come across in the best way possible – job done 👏👏
